Phosphorus Removal

Alum, lime, or iron salts are chemicals added to the wastewater to remove phosphorus.

With these chemicals, the smaller particles ‘floc’ or clump together into large masses.

The larger masses of particles will settle faster when the effluent reaches the next

step–the sedimentation tank. This process can reduce the concentration of phosphate by

more than 95 percent.
